Cardiac Catheterization - Catheter Interventions

Heart catheterization is a procedure used to diagnose and treat certain cardiovascular diseases. The catheter – a long, thin tube - is inserted in an artery or vein in the arm or groin and guided through the blood vessels to the heart.

Using this catheter, doctors check the blood supply of the heart by the vessels. Some heart disease treatments are also done using cardiac catheterization. A series of interventions are realized in order to improve to blood flow to the heart:

  • Coronary angioplasty (PTCA) – to open blocked coronary arteries
  • Stent implantation – mainly by use of drug-eluting stents in order to reduce the risk of repeated stenosis
  • Vascular interventions on peripheral vessels, kidney arteries, pelvic vessels and vessels supplying the brain
  • Interventional electrophysiology: radiofrequency ablation in case of cardiac arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation

Catheterizations are usually  associated with local anesthesia, and patients are awake during the intervention. Recovery time for a cardiac catheterization is quick, and there is a very low risk of complications.
