Osteoporosis is characterized by disturbed bone metabolism, which makes the bone thinner and more porous. Bone mass decreases and the bones lose stability. In an advanced stage, the bones are so porous that even small falls or heavy lifting can lead to fractures, such as vertebral body fractures or femoral neck fractures.

Osteoporosis is widespread. Most affected are women after menopause. Every fourth woman over 50 suffers from osteoporosis. After menopause, the risk increases again. Approximately 25% of osteoporosis cases occur in men.

There are basically some risk factors for the development of osteoporosis. These include a positive family history, immobility, underweight, malnutrition or low muscle mass. Other diseases, such as POI (premature ovarian insufficiency), also increase the risk of osteoporosis. Early prevention is particularly important if you are at increased risk.

A healthy lifestyle, a balanced, calcium-rich diet and regular endurance and strength training can help prevent osteoporosis. If necessary, supplementation with calcium and vitamin D is also recommended.
